To reproduce the natural color of an object through color imaging systems, the range of the reproducible color, i.e., the color gamut, of the color display devices must be expanded, because the color gamut of current display devices such as cathode ray tubes (CRTs) and liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is insufficient. We present a new method to enlarge the color gamut for the LCD device using more than three primaries, i.e., multiprimaries, generated by a diffraction grating and a liquid crystal panel. The optical system for the multiprimary color display is introduced, and its capability of increasing the gamut is discussed. The experimental result displayed by seven primary colors is also demonstrated. © 1999 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. [S0091-3286(99)02011-5]

The PLVC Display Color Characterization Model Revisited

This work proposes a study of the Piecewise Linear assuming Variation in Chromaticity (PLVC) display color characterization model. This model has not been widely used as the improved accuracy compared with the more common PLCC (Piecewise Linear assuming Chromaticity Constancy) model is not significant for CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) display technology, and it requires more computing power than this ...

Long-Term Data Projector Color Performance Test

The test parameters were selected as a direct result of a previous study.1 That work involved five Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) projectors and two projectors based on Digital Light ProcessingTM technology. The sample size for this test was increased to seven LCD projectors and nine DLPTM projectors. Like the previous work, this study was supported by Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI). TI pers...

Optimal gamut volume design for three primary and multiprimary display systems

Primary selection plays a fundamental role in display design. Primaries affect not only the gamut of colors the systems is able to reproduce, but also, they have an impact on the power consumption and other cost related variables. Using more than the traditional three primaries has been shown to be a versatile way of extending the color gamut, widening the angle view of LCD screens and improvin...

Agile Spectrum Imaging: Programmable Wavelength Modulation for Cameras and Projectors

We advocate the use of quickly-adjustable, computer-controlled color spectra in photography, lighting and displays. We present an optical relay system that allows mechanical or electronic color spectrum control and use it to modify a conventional camera and projector. We use a diffraction grating to disperse the rays into different colors, and introduce a mask (or LCD/DMD) in the optical path t...

High-efficiency and fast-response tunable phase grating using a blue phase liquid crystal.

We demonstrate a tunable phase grating using a polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystal. Because of the electric-field-induced rectangularlike phase profile, a high diffraction efficiency of 40% is achieved. Moreover, this device shows submillisecond response time. The proposed tunable phase grating holds great potential for photonics and display applications.
